Fireplace update: Step 2

Hi, friends! I'm excited to share the next step in our fireplace renovation project..choosing the fireplace surround! As you may have read in my previous post on step 1, demo was a little bit of a mess (and still is) but all the previous tile has been removed and is getting ready for prep for level and sanding. In the meantime, I'm here to share with you the fun part..design!

Choosing the tile has been extremely challenging. There are just too many beautiful options to choose from! I narrowed it down to two options and asked my Instagram followers to share which one was their favorite. Received lots of great feedback, so thank you to everyone who commented and shared their opinion! After lots of thinking about which pattern would look the best in our house, I ended up going back to the store and chose a different pattern that was in between the two I originally picked. I wanted something with texture and pattern, but I didn't want it to be too busy.

I'm going to wait to reveal which pattern we chose when the fireplace is finished..so stay tuned!

The three main things to consider when picking out the material for your fireplace surround include:

-Texture

Don't be afraid to be bold with texture. Stone and tile are a few of the common ones, but I've seen great designs with wood, quartz and marble.

-Color

This is another area where you can have some fun with bringing attention to this centerpiece. If you're more of a neutral gal/guy, go for a more textured pattern to bring it to life and add some pops of color to your mantel or on the hearth/ground with some weaved or wire baskets, pillows, etc.

-Pattern

When considering pattern, think about the room the fireplace is in but also how it ties into other rooms in the house. It doesn't necessarily have to match, but if you can tie in a similar pattern to let's say the kitchen back splash it will provide a cohesiveness throughout your home.

The big learning is have fun with it and be patient. That's one area I struggle with (not going to lie), but when you are taking on your own DIY you want to make sure you are doing everything right which may require a little bit more time.
